“Sustainable patterns of living meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”

— School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA)

At Lynwood Senior High School, sustainability is a shared responsibility and a whole-school priority. We are committed to empowering students, staff, and our wider community to understand environmental challenges, think critically about solutions, and take meaningful action at local to global levels.

Sustainability at Lynwood is not limited to a single subject or program. Instead, it is embedded across teaching, learning, operations, and community partnerships, ensuring students develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to be responsible global citizens.

A Whole-School Approach

All staff at Lynwood Senior High School play a role in sustainability education. We:

  • model sustainable behaviours
  • embed sustainability concepts across learning areas
  • create teachable moments that connect curriculum to real-world action

Specialist programs such as Environment and Life Sciences (EaLS) and Lynwood Environmental Academic Flexible Learning (LEAF) provide pathways for deeper engagement, leadership, and community work in sustainability.

Our Sustainability Initiatives

Lynwood Senior High School implements a range of initiatives that position the school as a leader in sustainability education, including:

  • Lynwood SHS uses data-driven approaches to reduce energy, water, and resource use through initiatives such as the ClimateClever Schools Program, student-led audits, reduced printing, composting, and biodiversity projects.
  • The school operates a comprehensive recycling system with over 20 recycling streams, including a Community Recycling Station, composting, and specialist recycling programs. Students are actively involved in audits, sorting, and awareness campaigns.
  • Students lead and participate in sustainability initiatives through programs such as EaLS, LEAF, Green Team, Birdiya Koorlangka, and STARS, developing leadership, cultural awareness, and responsibility for sustainability.
  • EaLS and LEAF Coordinators are appointed to lead sustainability initiatives that engage and empower students and staff to adopt sustainable practices at school and in the wider community.
  • Sustainability is embedded in school planning and operations through a triple bottom line approach, balancing environmental, social, and economic outcomes to support long-term, whole-school improvement.
